Orthodontics for Adults
Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age. More and more adults are realizing that it is never too late for orthodontic treatment, and are finding that orthodontics can make a tremendous impact on their lives. People often associate orthodontics with children and adolescence. However, one out of every five patients in orthodontic treatment is over the age of 21. Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age, and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile.
With the advances in technology, high-tech brackets and wires have streamlined the orthodontic process. The use of new techniques and appliances can greatly reduce discomfort levels, decrease the number of visits, and shorten treatment time. Brackets are smaller and even come in a clear material to make them less noticeable. These cutting-edge tools make treatment much easier and also more time efficient.
As an adult orthodontic patient, there are special considerations that must be made. Periodontal evaluation and monitoring is often required when treating adult cases. This will entail a consultation with a periodontist, who will evaluate the health of your soft tissue (gums) and your bone. A periodontal evaluation is important, as the health of your teeth, gums, and bone is of utmost importance and our number one priority. Adults also may have experienced some breakdown or loss of their teeth and bone that supports the teeth and may require periodontal treatment before, during and/or after orthodontic treatment. Bone loss can also limit the amount and direction of tooth movement that is advisable. This is why it is extremely important that you continue to see a general dentist for routine checkups during treatment. If necessary, our orthodontist will work with your dentist and/or other dental specialists to achieve an ideal result. We want to make sure that orthodontic treatment will not cause any harm, and will result in a healthier mouth, a more beautiful smile and a happier you!
